Greening the Games Project
The construction of the
unit took an average of eleven (11) minutes
and set
up a further fourteen (14) minutes and displayed
the feature planting with a
flowering border as required.
Assembling the wire frame
component proved difficult to outsource
and we
were left with the task of completing it
ourselves. This did not prove so
easy when we came to processing close to
a thousand units.
The main difficulty proved
to be in the dispersal of the units through
the
site. This was complicated by the fact that
the plan positioning proved not
to be the ideal display point and resulted
in several hundred of the units
having to be relocated on site.
This showed one of the
weaknesses of the construct in that it did
not have a
rigid form. When attempts were made to move
the unit it lost tension in the
wire support and frequently collapsed.
The sheer logistics of
moving a thousand advanced trees around
such a large
and rambling site proved daunting and took
some twenty percent longer to
accomplish than originally projected.
The main error in estimates
occurred again with the Sphagnum. The increase
in weight experienced in development was
not matched or even approximated in
terms of volume and the initial allowance
had to be quadrupled to
accommodate the total number of units. |
