Hospitality
Hospitality covers a wide range of usages including
hotel of whatever standard, clubs both public
and private, cinemas and theatres and all manner
of sporting facility.
The principle objective in the planting either
indoor or out should be
To establish a welcoming ambience for the visiting
patron
To define the character of the establishment
To articulate the various areas of activity
To compliment the design of the building and its
interior.
In establishing a welcoming ambience the planting
both outdoor and in should be complimentary and
lead the patron through the facility.
Areas of high use e.g. reception, dining, bar
should be prominently signaled either through
concentrated floral exhibits or verdant screening.
Rooms in hotels overlooking gardens or indoor
plant displays have a significantly higher approval
rating than those which do not.
Areas where patrons are more likely to become
distressed should feature higher representational
displays of foliage.
Where possible rooms should feature plant displays
to promote a sense of belonging.
Selectively use of screen plantings give the
impression of separateness without loss of visibility.
Utility passes such as to kitchen areas or toilets
can be informally screened without the necessity
of concealment.
Plants quickly define the character of a property
as casual gregarious , formal or functional. It
is the most enduring impression a visitor is left
with when they leave. It is the single most important
factor in their decision to return.
Defining use variations within a property is
of particular importance especially where several
disparate functions co-exist in a limited space.
Patrons will be considerably more at ease in an
defined area rather than feeling themselves at
large.
The use of species of plants of contrasting appearance
and habit signal variation of use as effectively
as colour or furnishings.
Plants must remain in balance with the space
occupied. They should not be overbearing in the
space nor should they lose significance.
They should not impede on traffic except where
intended as a directional tool. Spayed vase forms
should not be relegated to corners any more than
soft foliage plants should be displayed against
a busy fractured backgrounds.
